Become a Board Member with the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust
 

Help to make a difference in your community!

The Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust (ORMLT) is currently recruiting new members for our Board of Directors. As a member of the Board, you will be helping to direct the affairs of the Land Trust in accordance with its objectives, constitution and bylaws, applicable legislation, and approved strategic plans.

 

We strive to further diversify the Board through a wide range of perspectives, ethnicities, ages, genders, life experiences including Indigenous Peoples. 

 

ORMLT is committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive organization. Diversity among our members, volunteers, staff and Board of Directors allows us to better understand, connect and to respond to ORMLT members and communities and make better decisions for the Trust.

We are also recruiting for non-Board volunteers for our various committees. 

​

We are especially interested in attracting new members who have at least one of the following:

  1. Success in fundraising by raising significant funds from major donors and legacy gifts for a cause you believe in including environmental and conservation initiatives;

  2. Contacts and relationships with major donors and foundations, with capacity for and interest in connecting new major donors with the Land Trust;

  3. Finance, accounting and controls knowledge and experience as a Certified Accountant (CPA or equivalent) with direct non-profit experience and skills and knowledge to potentially become Board Treasurer or Audit Chair;

  4. Skills and expertise in environmental specialty areas such as conservation, environmental science, biology, ecology, land securement and stewardship;

  5. Previous service on a Board(s) or as a senior manager reporting to a Board or equivalent, with a demonstrated interest in not-for-profit governance and leadership.


As a member of the Board, each Director serves in a position of confidence for the organization and is responsible for the effective governance and corporate health of the Trust.

Our Mission

The Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust is a registered charity that secures, preserves and restores ecologically significant or at-risk lands on and near the Oak Ridges Moraine for the benefit of nature and Canadians.  

 

Our Commitment to you:

New Directors will be provided with orientation, training and information in support of their responsibilities and will be supported by staff and other Directors in carrying out Trust activities. Directors will be given an opportunity to get involved in their areas of ability or interest and are encouraged to learn new skills relevant to their service to the Trust.

 

Directors will be part of a team that treats each other with respect, and encourages everyone to share their insights, ideas, skills, knowledge and experience.

What you bring:

  1. Personal commitment to the Trust’s vision, values, and mission and to environmental protection in general;

  2. Knowledge of or interest in the Oak Ridges Moraine ecosystem and the importance of its protection and conservation for long-term public benefit;

  3. Personal attributes of benefit to the Trust, including integrity; ability to participate effectively and constructively in group decision-making and discussions; personal network of individuals and organizations that might help the Trust; comfort with virtual communications, online document access and online decision-making; willingness and time to learn; and

  4. Willingness and ability to invest 6 – 10 hours each month in ORMLT activities and to make a financial contribution, at least annually, of an amount significant to you.


Including some of the following:

  1. Related experience with not-for-profit Boards, committees, associations or other community groups as a director, member, donor, key volunteer, or staff;

  2. Understanding of the key principles of risk oversight in a not-for-profit organization;

  3. Knowledge of fundraising and other revenue generation methods available to charities, including social enterprise and legacy gifts;

  4. Experience in oversight or senior management of charity finances;

  5. Experience in areas such as government relations, charity legislation and oversight of senior management;

  6. Experience living or working on or near the Moraine;

  7. Knowledge of environmental law and practices, Moraine ecology, land securement, land stewardship, rural real estate, or other aspects of the Trust’s programs;

  8. Life experience within or with a local Indigenous community and ability to help build relationships between that community and the Trust;

  9. Active involvement in social media and willingness to share and promote Trust news, events and campaigns.

  10. Term of Office: Directors are elected by the membership at the annual general meeting. Directors serve for a three-year term and may be re-elected for two further full terms of office.


We would also like to hear from individuals who would be interested in committee volunteering.


When and where we meet:

Board and committee meetings take place monthly, usually on the first Wednesday evening of each month, by video conference and/or at a central York Region location.
