The Ontario Kirtland's Warbler Habitat Restoration Initiative

The return of the endangered Kirtland’s Warbler to Ontario is within reach, but it begins with rebuilding the habitat they need to come back.

The Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust (ORMLT) is proud to be working with it's partners to restore the specialized ecosystems required by this rare and iconic songbird. While Kirtland’s Warblers are not currently breeding in this area of Ontario, the landscape still holds the potential to support them again. Through targeted restoration, we are preparing the ground, literally and figuratively, for their return.

Why It Matters

Kirtland’s Warblers depend on a very specific habitat: young jack and red pine forests growing on sandy, well-drained soils. They have particular understory needs as well as openings amongst the dense growth of young trees.  Historically, these conditions were created by natural disturbances like wildfire. Today, those processes are largely absent, and suitable habitat has become increasingly rare.

By restoring these ecosystems now, we are:

  • Creating the conditions needed for the species to recolonize Ontario

  • Supporting a globally rare and conservation-dependent bird, along with many other at-risk species that rely on this rare habitat

  • Reviving endangered pine barrens and savanna habitats

  • Enhancing biodiversity and ecological resilience across the Moraine

Ontario represents an important opportunity to expand the species’ range and strengthen its long-term survival.

What We’re Doing

ORMLT is working with partners, landowners, and restoration experts to proactively rebuild this habitat, including:

  • Planting jack pine, red pine and other associated species to establish future breeding grounds

  • Preparing and managing sites to mimic the natural disturbance patterns these ecosystems require

  • Restoring open, sandy landscapes that are critical for nesting success, from the ground up using seed based restoration.

  • Monitoring habitat development to ensure long-term suitability

This work is about thinking ahead, creating the right conditions today so that Kirtland’s Warblers, and many other species, can return tomorrow.

A Landscape Ready for Return

The Oak Ridges Moraine contains unique ecological features that make it a promising location for future Kirtland’s Warbler habitat. With careful stewardship, these lands can once again support the early successional forests the species depends on.

Restoration at this scale takes time, but each planted tree and restored hectare brings us closer to a future where the Kirtland’s Warbler can once again be part of the Oak Ridges Moraine’s natural landscape.

How You Can Help

You can be part of bringing this species back to Ontario:

  • Support habitat restoration through donations

  • Participate in tree planting and stewardship initiatives

  • Help raise awareness about species at risk and habitat loss

  • Care for your own land in ways that support biodiversity

Together, we are building the foundation for a return that will take years, but will last for generations.
